Kentucky – This past weekend I was on the move quite a bit.  I flew into CVG on Friday afternoon and zipped down to Louisville to catch Louisville Male vs. Bullitt East.  The JV game at 6pm was intriguing and featured a number of D1 prospects.  The varsity game did not disappoint.  Bullitt East lead by as many as 13 but Male came back in the 3rd and pulled away for the win in the 4th.

Saturday I cruised up to the Cincinnati metro area and watched a few games at the Hoops4Harvest event, an event Bret McCormick helped organize.  Then I ran down to the Lexington Lexus ShootOut at Henry Clay HS, where I was the official Media outlet.

Ended the busy weekend by heading back to Louisville for the in state battle with Kentucky.

My 2 cents from Sunday’s game first – Talking to Bob Corwin tonite about the game and he said Makayla Epps isn’t getting a lot of WNBA buzz.  She maybe one of the top players in college this year and I’d be surprised if by the end of the year, she hasn’t caught the attention of a number of WNBA people.  She almost single handily carried UK to a win today.  They basically have 5 players, playing on the road against a stacked Louisville team and she had 22 points, 15 rebounds and 6 assists.  It was a gutsy performance to say the least.  If I was UK I’d be deeply concerned if anyone gets injured, they are in deep trouble.  I’m not even sure how they can have contact drills in practice for fear that anyone gets hurt.

Top 5 Teams (In order) –

  1. Hamilton Heights – Hard to go against a team that features a 6′ PG with great handles and 3 point range (Jazmine Massengill), a 6’1 SG with elite athleticism, good motor and ability to shoot the 3 (Elizabeth Balogun), 2 sisters who have a ton of talent (Amber & Treasure Hunt) and a 6’6 freshmen, who maybe the top 2020 in the country in Kamilla Cardosa.
  2. Montini Catholic – They were without Syracuse signee Nikki Oppenheimer and still mowed down Simon Kenton, a top 10-20 HS in Kentucky by 30-35.  Kaylee Bambule is a great shooter, make that an elite shooter.  Ohio University is getting a legit shooting guard.  South Dakota signee Claudia Kunzer is scrappy and they have at least 4 other D-1 prospects lead by 6’3 junior Aaliyah Patty and 6’5 Lindsey Jarosinski.  Sophomore Zoe Zacker and junior Illysse Pitts also impressed.
  3. Louisville Male – Knocked off Butler earlier this week, and played great against Bullitt East, coming back from a 13 point deficit.  They have a loaded team with 7 or 8 potential D-1 prospects.  Junior PG Ciaja Harrison, a St. Louis commit, runs the show.  Junior Emilia Sexton is a high level shooter.  Unsigned seniors Jada Owens, Kyra Hogan and Logan Calvert are the forwards while sophomore Cameron Browning anchors the middle.  Their best prospect may just be sophomore sensation Joelle Johnson, an under the radar, high motor, physical player with versatility to play the 3 or 4.
  4. Bullitt East – Couldn’t knock off Male but Linday Duvall was good enough the next day to whoop Southwestern, a top 20-25 team in KY, from south of Lexington.  This is a somewhat rebuilding year for Southwestern but they are still a quality opponent.  Bullitt East doesn’t have a ton of big time prospects, but Duvall is awesome and the rest of the team plays really hard and shoots it well.
  5. DuPont Manual – They were missing some key players but junior Jaela Johnson is a future Power 5 level PG.  Tonysha Curry is one of the top unsigned players in the mid-south and 6’1 sophomore Nila Blackford is steadily improving.  When they get healthy they have a chance to make some noise in their region.

The Top Committed Juniors & Seniors –

Kyra Hogan – 6′ F – Male – Thick, physical player, can shoot the 3.
Logan Calvery – 5’10 F – Male – Thick perimeter player who goes inside or out, good hi-lo passer
Madi Meier – 6’2 Post – Simon Kenton – Thick post, works for position, good size, makes baskets around the hoop
Alehia Tucker – 5’6 G – Holy Cross Covington – Scrappy guard, has decent handles, good overall athlete
Tonysha Curry – 5’10 G/F – DuPont Manual – Can play 1 thru 4, probably the top unsigned player in Kentucky.  Good motor, can handle the ball, very physical player.

Zenoviah Walker – 5’4 CG – Danville – Very fast speedy guard, gets steals, needs to polish offensive game.
