Bronx, NY – The Lady Choz annually hold a 3 day showcase in their home gym, located a few blocks from Yankee Stadium.  Earl, Will and crew put on a first class event with plenty of talent.  While the event was 3 days, I attended the first 2 days, missing a few teams I have yet to see on Sunday.  Those teams include Immaculate Conception (NJ), Baldwin (NY), University (NJ), Curtis (NY), St. Mary’s (NY), Sachem East (NY) and Grand St. Campus (NY).  The below recap is based on the teams I saw play at The Mecca.

The Top 5 Teams (I saw 24 different teams play on Friday & Saturday) –

  1. Forest Trail (NC) – They have D-1 players at every position and depth.  Delaney Rudd is one of the top High School coaches in North America.  KK Deans is a legit 2019 PG.  They played this weekend without 2018 star Kelly Foster and still controlled their game vs Bill Crothers (one of the top OSBA Canadian teams), all the while getting some of their younger players valuable minutes and experience.
  2. Franklin (NJ) – When you have a player of Sophomore 6’2 Diamond Miller’s ability you are going to be in the winner’s circle most of the time at the high school level.  There’s not many players with her size and athleticism that can do the things she can do.  They also surround Miller with a nice compliment of players who understand their roles like junior wing Camille Gray and senior post Monique Davis-Campbell.  The team has very good chemistry.
  3. Christ the King (NY) – Possibly the most talented team at the event, CTK boasts a young lineup featuring a frontline with 2 sophomores and a freshmen.  Kaelynn Satterfield, Klarke Sconiers and Natalija Marshall were 3 of the better frontline players at the event and they have 2 years of HS experience combined.  The upside at CTK is crazy and if they can fill the void at the PG spot or one of their current players can step up, they will easily be one of the top HS teams in the country next year.
  4. Life Center Academy (NJ) – Part of making my list at each event is winning, which Life Center has done at a number of the events I’ve seen them at this year.  They have one of the top 2018 players in the northeast in Imani Lewis, a 6’1 lefty who can dominate other players physically.  They have a good group around Lewis especially the under rated 6’2 Gabriella Zapata-Smalls.
  5. Rock Creek Christian (MD) – Coach Boogie is doing more with less.  RCCA is down to just 6 players, but those kids play hard, play together and know how to score.  They also have traveled all over the country and have a ton of experience in big time games.  Playing in the Mecca was just another game for this crew.
