Candice Dupree Invitational

Tampa, FL – A well run event put on by the Tampa Thunder, that regularly attracts a ton of Florida teams, as well as numerous D2, NAIA and Juco coaches, the Candice Dupree Invitational had many of Florida’s top players on hand in pre-determined matchups.

With all the talent on hand, we focused on 6 up and coming players that should be on your radar this summer.

Sydney James – 6′ WF – 2020 – Tampa Thunder Claitt – High motor, aggressive forward, James can step out and hit the 3 ball.  She’s a typical high school “4” player who shouldn’t have too hard of a time making the transition to a college “3”.  Her toughness was an attribute that truly stood out to me.

Peryonna Sylvester – 5’6 PG – 2020 – East Coast United – Peryonna is a fast guard with nice handles, who does a great job of creating for herself and others.  On Saturday she was efficient attacking the basket and scoring or creating shots for her teammates.  Improvement can come in speeding up her perimeter shot release.

Lexie Duckett – 5’11 SG – 2019 – DME Gold – Duckett, who I’ve seen play numerous times is silky smooth.  She does a great job coming off a ball screen and has a killer mid range jumper that she uses wisely as opposed to driving the ball into heavy traffic.  She’s got great length at the guard spot and her stock should continue to rise this summer.

Mary McMillan – 5’6 PG – 2020 – Tampa Thunder Claitt – In a deep PG class in Florida, McMillan stands out for her ability to understand how to make the most of her talent.  She’s got a great understanding of change of speed and change of direction, which allows her to constantly take defenders off the bounce.  She had some nice finishes around the basket and her ability to make plays really stood out.

KK Davis – 5’8 CG – 2020 – FGB Delicia Washington – Davis was one of the top athletes at the event.  The lefty is just so long and explosive, she had multiple steals that she converted in to easy layups.  Her release is also super quick and with her length getting shots off is never a problem.  If she can develop even better consistency from long range she will be mentioned with the top CGs in the country.

Sophia Jones – 5’6 PG – 2020 – FGB Delicia Washington – One of the higher IQ PGs I watched at the event, Sophia had great poise at running the show for her team and providing a calming presence.  Skilled and efficient, she was one of my favorite players to watch on Saturday.
